Identical twin sisters Charlotte and Laura Carrivick have grown up playing and writing music together; their unique style shows their strong Folk and Bluegrass influences without obscuring their English roots. Produced and recorded by Joe Rusby, Over The Edge is the sisters’ 5th album of finely crafted songs and their best to date. The album demonstrates tight harmonies and a strong connection that only siblings can achieve. The multitalented duo perform their original songs on guitar, fiddle, mandolin, dobro and clawhammer banjo with clarity and skill. Both sisters have had varied musical influences throughout their lives. Laura started out with classical violin at 10 but was soon more interested in Folk music playing along to Chieftains CD’s. Charlotte also started out classically, but in her case with the guitar. She picked up the mandolin a few year’s later and in 2003 they attended the ‘Sore Fingers’ Bluegrass course. This was where Laura first heard the dobro, which she then also decided to learn. In recent years Charlotte has taken up the clawhammer banjo, bringing a more ‘old timey’ feel to their sound. The sisters come with a stack of awards under their belt, having won the South West Buskers and Street Entertainers Competition, which earned them their first spot at Glastonbury Festival. In 2008 Laura achieved 2nd place at the RockyGrass Fiddle Contest in America and in 2010 the sisters started as runners-up in the BBC Young Folk Awards. After the release of “From The Fields” they won Band/Duo of the Year award in the 2011 FATEA Awards and most recently Charlotte won first place in both Old-time banjo and fiddle at FOAOTMAD's festival in Gainsborough. Other highlights included a live session on BBC’s Woman’s Hour and several regional TV and radio appearances. Over The Edge features 11 originals (9 songs, 2 instrumentals) and one traditional song. John Breese plays double bass throughout and features Blair Dunlop on harmonies on track ‘Bird’. The album cover was inspired by a Rex Whistler painting used for a poster to advertise an exhibition at the Tate. “It almost had something to represent each song on the album in the painting so Laura repainted it, altered bits and made it fit perfectly!” Charlotte Carrivick

The Carrivick Sisters first started performing as a duo in 2006, originally as buskers before turning professional when they left school. They also recorded their first CD 'My Own Two Feet' in their bedroom at home in Salcome, South Devon. Their second CD, "Better Than 6 Cakes" was recorded at Modern World Studios in September 2007 to critical acclaim. “Jupiter’s Corner” - mixed by Joe Rusby at Pure Studios and released in 2009 also received rave reviews including 5* in Maverick Magazine, which lead up to being invited to SxSW in Texas, and tours in both Canada and Europe. In October 2011 the Devon twins went back into the studio with several other top musicians including BJ Cole (Dolly Parton, Elton John) to record their 4th album “From the Fields”. With the new album ready to go, this year hasmarked the Carrivick Sisters’ journey, from youthful pretenders to serious contenders in the UK music scene, from teenage promise to the rich assurance of young adulthood - now securely positioned as the UK’s leading young folk duo. http://www.thecarrivicksisters.co.uk ![]() |
