Quotes
"I’m almost overly excited to be playing Greenwich this year- I'm a South London girl so it's nice to play somewhere local, especially in such beautiful surroundings" – Jenny Eclair

Background
Greenwich Comedy Festival was launched in September 2009 by sibling team Will & Cass Briggs. The pair were introduced to the wonderful world of comedy at a young age by their late great step-father, the legendary comedy promoter, Malcolm Hardee. It was at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2008 that they realised how absurd it was that London didn’t have anything on this scale. They set to work shortly after to bring the Capital the event that it justly deserves. With a triumphant first year under their belts they’re going all out to make this year’s even bigger and better. Their dream is to become one of the biggest comedy festivals in the world, on a par with Edinburgh and Montreal, and this year's festival is a major step towards putting Greenwich on the global comedy map.

The Greenwich Festivals
Greenwich Comedy Festival is part of The Greenwich Festivals, a series of first class events celebrating the cultural vibrancy of Greenwich. Running from April to November The Greenwich Festivals will provide some of the best and most varied entertainment in the capital in one of the UK's best locations. From high quality street performance to comedy, music to suit all tastes and invigorating dance performances - The Greenwich Festivals will firmly establish Greenwich as the place to enjoy summer in the capital. Many of the country's best loved and most experienced cultural groups are based in Greenwich. In recognition and support of this, Greenwich Council is delighted to launch The Greenwich Festivals.

PRESS RELEASE

GREENWICH COMEDY FESTIVAL 2010
When: 6th – 12th September
Where: Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich

SURREALIST SUPERSTAR BILL BAILEY & US CULT-ICON TOM GREEN
CONFIRMED TO PERFORM AT GREENWICH COMEDY FESTIVAL!

London’s biggest ever comedy festival is now the only place to get your comedy-kicks this summer as BILL BAILEY and TOM GREEN join the all-star line-up performing at the Old Royal Naval College this September.

Opening the week-long festival is cult-hero TOM GREEN who’s flying in for his FIRST EVER UK SHOW! You’ll know him from his anything-goes run as the funniest, most unpredictable personality on MTV, his deliciously loony roles in comedy films ‘Road Trip’ and ‘Freddy Got Fingered’ and his whirlwind marriage to Drew Barrymore. He’s graced the cover of Rolling Stone, commandeered the coveted guest-host chair on ‘The Late Show with David Letterman’ and conquered the World Wide Web with his free-wheeling and wildly popular online talk show ‘Tom Green’s House Tonight’. Experience one of the great comic minds, live and in person, as he takes to the stage and provides non-stop laughter with his brilliantly cracked view of the world around him.

Rounding up this outstanding week of comedy is the wonderfully wild BILL BAILEY performing a very special charity gig on Sunday night. Following his starring roles in ‘Black Books’ and ‘Never Mind The Buzzcocks’ the master of musical comedy went global with his highly acclaimed show ‘Tinselworm’. He’s now back on home ground so come and witness a genius at work as he weaves his spell of surreal stand-up and impromptu musical arrangements. There’s also the added feel-good-factor as all proceeds from the show will go to The Sumatran Orangutan Society, a charity dedicated to the conservation of Sumatran orangutans and their forest home…now that really is comedy with a conscience.

Tom and Bill are in good company with the likes of REGINALD D HUNTER, ED BYRNE, JENNY ECLAIR, STEPHEN K AMOS, PHIL JUPITUS and many many more performing at the majestic Old Royal Naval College. This iconic riverside setting will be transformed into a comedy wonderland featuring an architect-designed Big Top, a world famous Spiegel Tent and the exquisite Fountain Bar formed around one of the buildings beautiful fountains.

The festival site is totally FREE to get in to – with shows individually priced - so there’s no need to miss out on the dazzling light shows and enchanted gardens, tea parties and Silent Discos, schmaltzy Jazz and Swing. Expect teases and squeezes from the cabaret and burlesque troupes, as well as dancers, jugglers, stilt-walkers and clown-stalkers. There might even be a few bubbles floating round!!

The Sumatran Orangutan Society
The Sumatran Orangutan Society is dedicated to the conservation of Sumatran orangutans and their forest home. Our international branches raise awareness of the threats facing wild orangutans, and raise funds to support grassroots conservation projects in Sumatra. Together with a team of committed Indonesian conservationists, we work with local communities living alongside orangutan habitat. We visit schools, plant trees and provide training to help the local people work towards a more sustainable future for their forests.
